Margate Middle School Students Raise Money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital

Students at Margate Middle School can take satisfaction in the fact that their efforts will help in the battle against cancer.

Margate students participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon program and raised $2,365 to help children battling cancer and other threatening diseases. One team at the school alone, the seventh grade Hurricanes, raised $1,062.

Mock Margate Commission Reveals How Tomorrow’s Leaders Think Today

Students from Margate Middle School took over the city on Wednesday as members of the school’s Student Council and National Honor Society, ages 11 to 13, replaced Margate City commissioners, lead administrators and department heads in a Student Government Day mock exercise.

Major decisions were made, including an opening of a McDonalds in the school’s cafeteria, a four-day school week for kids and the approval of teacher of the month. Commissioners voted “No” to changing the voting age to 12 in the city and “No” to an after school club at the community center.

Free “Weekend with Experts” Workshops for parents of students with disabilities. Additional workshops offered throughout year

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) ESE (Exceptional Student Education) Department is offering free Saturday “Weekend With the Experts” workshops.

Although targeted for parents of students with disabilities, the workshops are open to all parents who wish to attend. Detailed workshop information is available on the ESE website. School Board Selects New Superintendent of Schools

Following Wednesday morning interviews with two finalists vying for the position of Broward Schools Superintendent, the Broward School Board chose Robert Runcie, Chief of Staff to the Board of Education, Chicago Public Schools, the third largest school district in the nation with 410,000 students.

From here, the School Board negotiates salary and start date with Runcie, Marsy Smith, APR, governmental affairs for Broward Schools told MargateNews.net.

Put your Two Cents in on the Next Broward Schools Superintendent

The Broward County School Board announced it has received 44 applicants from the search team of Ray and Associates, Inc. in its search for a new Superintendent of Schools to replace Jim Notter who retired June 30, 2011.

All District stakeholders are invited to submit questions online they would like to see asked of final candidates at an open public forum scheduled for Tuesday, September 13 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at J A World at Broward College North Campus in Coconut Creek. The search team will establish a condensed list of questions from solicited questions and from input obtained during stakeholder forums held in June.

Questions may be submitted online directly to Ray and Associates, Inc. or mailed to Ray and Associates, Inc. 4403 First Avenue SE, Suite 407, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.

Margate Middle Receives $40,000 Grant to Supplement Math/Science Education

Margate Middle School has received $40,000 as part of the Innovation Generation grant program from Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc.  Through the grant, Margate Middle will supplement its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Magnet program with science and math hands-on projects and field trip opportunities that will include local and state competitions.  Approximately 400 students will be impacted.

‘Circle Gazette’ Great Opportunity for Young Writers

In the August Edition of the Circle Gazette 14-year-old columnist, Bilal Amodu writes about “Kids & Politics.” With regards to raising the national debt, the young journalist writes:

“It seemed that the legislators would be zealous to commence a new philosophy where compromise would be ubiquitous while partisanship would be scarce.”

Another 14-year-old author, A.J. Cross, explores green energy and solar alternatives in “Green Tip of the Month” while Sara Cross and Daniela Gómez, Ages 10 and 11, talk about the woes of drinking too much sugar-laced soda pop in their column “Living Healthy.”

Margate 5th Grader Pursues Love of Literature

When Tamar Lilienthal entered the National Geographic Kids Book Review Contest, she didn’t think she would win. After all, kids ages 9 to 14 across America compete for the prize, she thought, so the odds were stacked against her.

The story has a happy ending. Tamar took top honors in the contest with her review of A Little Princess and is now an official book reviewer and "Dogeared Blogger" for the National Geographic Kids website.

Margate City Officials honored by Middle School

Margate Assistant City Manager, Yolanda Rodriguez, and Margate City Planner, Ben Ziskal, were recognized by Margate Middle School officials at the December 8, city meeting for their outstanding contribution to the Margate Middle School Glides program.

Glides, the Global Learning Initiative through Digital Education for Students, has been offered in more than 77 Broward schools since the initiative was launched in 2005.

Monarch High School Principal quiet about teacher caught stealing student IDs

Former Monarch High Social Studies teacher, Sheyla Diaz, 44, made headlines in May for opening credit card accounts using personal information she stole from Monarch High students in Coconut Creek. She received six months of house arrest and lost her job.

When attempting to contact Monarch High Principal, James Neer, regarding policies put in place to prevent ID theft from happening to Monarch students in the future, Neer didn’t return MargateNews.net calls or emails for comment.

Florida Career College coming to Margate

A rezoning of the Penn Dutch Plaza along State Road 7 to the north in Margate will allow for 30,000 square feet of Florida Career College (FCC) to open in the plaza, which will add jobs and disposable income to the Margate economy.

Occupancy for FCC is TBA and based on the approval of Margate's Planning & Zoning Board and City Commission.

Margate Elementary School 3rd Grade Teacher, Alava Alexander, is teaching kids how to run a business at an early age. She shows them how to determine profit, salaries and expenses, and imparts real world experience in dealing with customers, counting money and running the cash register. She calls it Kidz ‘n’ Biz.

What are we feeding our Children?

A young, overweight Mom entered the convenience store the other day and gave her child a choice of what to have for breakfast. The child, appearing about six years old and overweight too, chose the strawberry crème wafers for $0.99, a mass of bleached flour and sugar void of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber.

It's time we stop feeding our kids junk. Bad diet is adversely affecting the minds and bodies of a whole generation, the least problems of which may be physical obesity.

Music, Art & Science at Margate's AWE

To attend the 3rd Annual Arts & Sciences Showcase at Margate’s Atlantic West Elementary is to live every parent’s dream: see your children sing and dance, relish in their artwork and watch them explore scientific realms.

Hundreds of parents and teachers looked on while the AWE Soaring Eagle Chorus, comprised of students in grades 2 through 5, performed classics to Calypso, throwing their hands in the air, twisting, shouting and bopping their bodies to a boogie beat.

Atlantic West Elementary showcases student artists and scientists

The Third Annual Arts & Sciences Showcase takes place at Margate’s Atlantic West Elementary on Tuesday, May 26 at 6:00 p.m. Highlights include a retrospective of student artwork from the 2008-09 school year, award-winning science projects and an interactive ‘Make & Take’ art project for kids and parents to bring home. The event also includes a performance by AWE’s Soaring Eagle Chorus.

Margate School Celebrates Patriotism

“I’m a pure patriot, a total American, and I don’t see things any other way,” said Beth Agami, mother of fallen hero, Specialist Daniel J. Agami, killed in action in Iraq on June 21, 2007.

Beth Agami is concerned that patriotism is taking a back seat in the lives of South Floridians. So many come from other lands, she says, and don't celebrate with their children the history and traditions associated with American freedom.

Getting Over the Budget Crunch

We read stories daily about budget cuts in education and how Margate’s children are being affected. Teachers are on strict budgets with regard to copies that can be made monthly. Students take home fewer worksheets and supplements.  Some of the richest and most timely materials available to teachers are not making it into the hands of students because of the copy quotas.
