Tentatively scheduled for February 19 & 20 of next year, the Margate Street Festival has two very successful years under its belt, drawing more than 5,000 attendees in the event’s inaugural year, and more than 7,500 last year say police estimates.

Margate to have Fireworks this year

Last year’s fireworks in Margate got bad reviews from residents. The display lasted about 10 minutes and was far from what city officials and residents expected.

“I’ve never seen fireworks shot so fast in my whole life,” said resident and former city commission candidate Le Peerman. “It was like they were getting paid by the second.”

Track Santa's Whereabouts on Christmas Eve

For more than 50 years, NORAD and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) have tracked Santa’s Christmas Eve flight.

The tradition began in 1955 after a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement for children to call Santa misprinted the telephone number. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the CONAD Commander-in-Chief's operations "hotline."

Margate Street Festival 2010: Get onboard now!

This year’s inaugural Margate Street Festival in February was an overwhelming success. In excess of 5,000 people attended the event, say police, and stories of vendors selling-out of goods and making profits came into the Margate Chamber of Commerce one after the next. O'Malley’s ran out of ribs, service providers acquired tons of leads and live entertainment -- from dance to music to performance art -- was non-stop. It was a world-class affair and the first of its kind in Margate.

So, is there money to be made in 2010?

Margate’s yearly July Fourth extravaganza cost between $25,000 and $30,000. Although Margate city officials are optimistic that sponsors may come forward with funds in time to save the event, they’ve currently set aside $14,000 to do something for the city on the anniversary of our freedom, but aren’t quite sure what at this point.
