Why not vote for Yardley?
By Mitchell Pellecchia, Staff Writer Tuesday, May 19, 2009 At a time when public trust in politicians is at an all-time low, one would think that they’ve got nothing to lose by voting for the underdog – at least that’s how Margate resident and Republican Scott Yardley sees it. The political neophyte has put his name in the hat to run for State Representative District 95 in 2010, a seat currently occupied by Jim Waldman, Democrat. “People don’t believe in government because they don’t think it’s effective,” said the native Floridian and father of eight. Yardley and wife Catherine operate an online art store from their Margate abode and home-school all their children. The family’s been living here for 20 years and Yardley says he understands the needs of the average person and “where people are really coming from.” Much like Waldman, Yardley doesn’t see himself as a politician. Yardley condemns corruption and waste in government and labels federal bailout initiatives as a waste of taxpayer money. “If big business can’t sustain itself, let it die. A surge of new ideas will replace it,” he said. Yardley has yet to strategize a platform for his campaign, he says. He’s taken to bashing his opponent for living outside District 95 (by law, you have to live in the District to represent the District) and if there were any one issue Yardley would land on first, it would be the squandering of taxpayer dollars. Conversely, Waldman feels as though taxes are a necessary evil. “Taxes are the price you pay to live in a civilized society,” Waldman said after the $1 cigarette tax passed earlier in the month. Yardley says he has integrity, “and all things political I’ll pick up along the way,” said the Special Forces veteran. He doesn’t care if he wins, he says, but in his mind running for office is the right thing to do. Yardley says lobbyists are destroying America. Some would beg to differ and instead point to partisan politics for bringing this country to its knees. Is Yardley a viable candidate? Absolutely! And a vote for Yardley is a vote for the home team. Even as a political novice (he ran and lost to incumbent Joe Varsallone for Margate City Commission last year) he can’t possibly screw things up worse than the bunch in office now. How can he? We’re already flat broke. __________________________________________ Get MargateNews.net on your desktop, laptop or mobile Internet with customizable RSS (Real Simple Syndication) Feeds.
