Margate Commissioner Buys Local Bar
Commissioner David McClean resurrects ‘Rec’ Room

Once the proud owner of Margate’s Ale House Rock Café, Margate Commissioner Dave McClean recently purchased the Recovery Room Beer & Music Hall at 2160 Mears Parkway in Margate.
McClean was well-known in the area for his Friday night Elvis Review at Ale House Rock, drawing Elvis impersonator fans from all over Broward County. He owned the bar for a few years until the Margate Community Redevelopment Agency (MCRA) purchased the plaza where the bar was located, presenting a conflict of interest to a city commissioner who also sat on the MCRA Board as landlord to the property.
McLean’s plan for “McLeans Bar & Grill” is to make it a family pub, serving quality pub food and beer and wine. In fact, his liquor license was just approved at City Hall Wednesday night.
Although McLean abstained from voting on license approval, his beer and wine license was approved unanimously by the dais 4-0.
“McLeans Bar & Grill” will have plenty of seating away from the bar to accommodate families with children, said McLean, and his concept includes entertainment and NO SMOKING. He’s currently working like the dickens to open the place for next month -- and it looks as though he’s doing most of the build-out himself, as he did with Ale House Rock.
Will McLean be doing Elvis again? Time will tell.
Margate city commissioners earn a salary of about $30,000 a year. Most have other jobs to supplement their income and, in the case of McLean, the bar business is in his blood.
