The Third Annual Arts & Sciences Showcase takes place at Margate’s Atlantic West Elementary on Tuesday, May 26 at 6:00 p.m. Highlights include a retrospective of student artwork from the 2008-09 school year, award-winning science projects and an interactive ‘Make & Take’ art project for kids and parents to bring home. The event also includes a performance by AWE’s Soaring Eagle Chorus.
The inspiration behind this year’s showcase is Soaring Eagle Chorus Director, Dessalines Ford and AWE Art Coordinator, Mindy Agress, both University of Miami Graduates and long-time mentors of the arts.
Joined by science teacher and head of the AWE Science Fair for eight years, Terry Marcello, the three have an interesting night planned as kids and parents explore the use of variables in a science experiment called “Turkey Gobbler” and art is created on the spot ala abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock.
“Pollock revolutionized art making in the 1950’s and rocked the art world with the departure of realism with his drip paintings. He taught us that art was about the process, not the product,” said Agress.
A chorus of 60 students, grades 2 through 5, will be performing a variety of musical styles and parents will have the opportunity to view students’ work and experience first-hand how their kids learn.
Atlantic West Elementary’s FCAT scores for third-graders – the only FCAT scores assessed for the school so far this year – show significant improvement over last year. The percentage of students scoring level-3 proficiency in math increased to 81 percent over last year’s 70 percent and, in reading, 66 percent over last year’s 61 percent.
The mean score for the school’s third graders is also up year over year: 301 up from 297 in reading; and 345 up from 329 in math. AWE is an “A” School eight years running.
Atlantic West Elementary, a proud Title I School, is located at 301 NW 69th Terrace Margate, FL 33063. Call 754-322-5300 for more information. In the past, the event has drawn up to 900 kids, parents and teachers.
