In a move to boost holiday spirit early, Margate’s St. Vincent Church awarded $2,500 to Margate law enforcement officials in support of their ‘Shop with a Cop’ program, a seasonal happening where police, firefighters and city staff take underprivileged kids shopping.

“We thought by donating now, other organizations would be encouraged to follow suit long before the holidays arrive,” said Harry Placke of the St. Vincent Men’s Guild.

Placke presented the gift to Margate crime prevention cop, Tony Careccia, a former Rikers Island correction officer and neighborhood policing icon in Margate. Careccia spends the majority of his day showing residents how to stay safe and be vigilant, and is vital to Margate's community policing efforts.

St. Vincent Church adds Brazilian mission

St. Vincent enjoys a spirited history of giving in Margate. The church contributes thousands of dollars yearly to city events (Fourth of July) and works in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club in coordinating fundraising initiatives and family-fun festivities in Margate. In this light, says Placke, gift-giving efforts by the church may increase, as the Archdiocese is committed to injecting the parish with hundreds of young, vibrant individuals committed to charity work.

The Miami Archdiocese is infusing St. Vincent with a Brazilian mission in order to rejuvenate attendance at the church and to fill the basket at mass time. The church will continue to deliver mass in both English and Spanish and will now include one in Portugeuse for Brazilian parishoners who prefer mass in their native tongue.

“We look forward to welcoming our new parishioners with open arms,” said Placke. “We think it’s a win-win for the church.”
