More Bulk Pickups in Margate
• To the tune of once a month

Junk piles should shrink with more frequent bulk pickups.
Junk piles should shrink with more frequent bulk pickups.

By Mitchell Pellecchia, Staff Writer

Monday, April 20, 2009

Margate residents can look forward to 12 bulk pickups a year effective October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2012, resulting from a new franchise agreement between the City of Margate and Waste Management Inc.

Back in 2003, after finding out that cities around Margate got more bulk pickups and paid less for them, Margate resident, Le Peerman, made it her mission to change things. After collecting more than 2,000 signatures from Margate residents, Peerman swayed the city into renegotiating six bulk pickups annually.

Not settling for just six, Peerman told city officials that she’d be back in 2009 when Waste Management’s contract was up again…and she was.

“It’s been a long hard road,” said the former commission candidate. “One more reading and we’re there.”

Peerman is referring to the second reading of an ordinance the first reading of which was passed by Margate City officials on April 15th. Although the amended franchise agreement with Waste Management could get shot down on next reading, it’s unlikely, said Peerman.

“Usually when it gets to this stage it’s a done deal, but anything can happen.”
_____________

Sidebar: Also included in the ammended contract good through 2012:

1. Waste Management will provide containers and equipment for waste collection and disposal service for five city events.

2. Annually, Margate shall receive a $5,000 sponsorship for special events.

3. A recycling program will be launched at specific city buildings and parks.

4. Portable toilets will be provided at a 50% discounted rate for five city events.
