Using Road Bond money recently approved by Margate voters, Margate Public Works is installing new curbs on Margate Boulevard for the first time in decades. The project is designed to restore the street back to its original grade, so water will drain properly and lanes traveling both ways will be passable in a rainstorm.
In addition to a safer road, says Sam May, Interim Public Works Director for Margate, “residents can expect a whole new look,” he said. Although Margate Boulevard has been paved numerous times since the last curb replacement, the city has never had the funds to restore Margate Boulevard curbs to street-grade level.
The street may appear narrower when finished, said the Public Works head, but only because the majority of Margate residents aren’t used to seeing the street with curbs.
The four phases of the project: two westbound and two east, are expected to be completed by the Fourth of July. If not, said May, the street will be cleared and ready for Margate’s Fourth of July Parade and the curb project finished shortly thereafter.
Sidebar: The city reuses the scrap it gathers in the street milling process for road-shoulder stabilization and other Public Works projects. This saves the city on purchasing road rock and can result in higher quality workmanship, May said.
