Man Stabbed in Downtown Margate
Bar brawl gone south
Tuesday,
April 14, 2009
Margate business owner, Thomas Sharkey, was stabbed in the back coming out of the Pair of Jacks Pub 441 on State Road 7 early Thursday morning.
Sharkey told police he was attacked outside the pub and as he subdued his attacker, two unidentified men came from the bar, beat him, kicked him and stabbed him in the right upper shoulder, according to a Margate Police report. The object used to stab Sharkey is unidentified in the report.
Sharkey was hospitalized and expected to recover. Alleged bar brawler, Keith Kulpa, was taken into custody for simple assault, but wasn't identified as the man who stabbed Sharkey. The report indicates that a Hispanic male might have been involved, but fled the scene in an older model four-door, silver Grand Marquis.
Bar fight gone bad
The police report reveals the underpinnings of a damsel bartender and a jealous boyfriend; male hubris and a cross-fire of fisticuffs. Unexpectedly, someone took to wielding a foreign object and seriously injured another. Depending on whom you talk to in the neighborhood, stories vary, making it difficult to distinguish fact from fiction.
Bartenders afraid to call Margate cops could be rumor
Some on the scene of the stabbing say the bartender inside Pair of Jacks knew that Sharkey had been stabbed, but neglected to call police. The same was said of the bar across the way. Bartenders say, that when calling police in the past, the address of their bar has been unfairly attached to incidents, even though an incident might not have taken place at their bar.
In this case, there’s little question that Sharkey was stabbed outside a Pair of Jacks as a result of an altercation inside the bar, say police.
Pair of Jacks still open
Pair of Jacks Pub 441 is located in the Payless Food Plaza at the end of Margate Boulevard and is a place growing in reputation for seedy characters. The pub leases their storefront from the city and is $35,000 arrears in rent. Margate has moved forward with eviction and, although city officials wish the pub had been closed by now, are at the mercy of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, who said they will serve the eviction notice when they get around to it.
