In order to gain access to funds otherwise not available to municipal governments, Margate City Commissioners recently formed the Margate Recreation Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization targeting federal and state monies available to enhance the recreation and leisure of Margate residents.
_______________
The newly formed non-profit has yet to apply for grants, but Margate Commissioner, Pam Donovan, said similar foundations in neighboring cities have done well in the past capturing federal funds to the benefit of their residents.
Every year the city comes up short on recreation funds, said Donovan, and has to “beg, borrow and steal” to fund events such as Fourth of July Fireworks and other programs that the city doesn’t know from one year to the next if budgetary constraints will allow.
Donovan said the Recreation Foundation is a way the city can get back some of the programs that residents enjoy and a means to expand recreational offerings in the city.
