Ron and Helen Gallardo went out for a joy ride on their sport bike Saturday afternoon August 7 in the vicinity of Royal Palm Boulevard and Riverside Drive in Coral Springs. They were on familiar roads close to home and visibility that day was near perfect.
"There was hardly anyone in the street," Ron said. "Just her and me."
Ron said the driver in the car to his right suddenly moved into his lane, colliding with his bike and throwing both of them from the motorcycle. Ron was critically injured in the accident and his wife Helen, mother of three, was killed.
_______________
Friends of Helen here in Margate have only fond memories of the 38-year-old office specialist’s lovable, laughable nature. She always wanted to see people happy, said close friends, and was constantly playing matchmaker to fix people up. Helen is survived by her three children Olivia (9), Victoria (12), and Christopher (16), family abroad, and her husband Ron, who suffered numerous broken bones and trauma in the accident.
Ron said he saw the driver of the vehicle, but the driver didn’t see him.
“She wasn’t paying attention,” Ron told MargateNews.net, adding he was doing the speed limit, maybe less, and that the driver (age 46) of the vehicle received a citation.
Ron has spent the better part of August in the hospital and his now home with his children who together will begin to rebuild their lives. Ron’s Mother, and daughter from his first marriage, Shannon, are staying with the Gallardos to help the family recover.
“As a family we will do what we can to pull through,” said Ron. “We’ve got to move on with life…I will miss Helen very much…we all will miss her so much.”
Ron will be out of work for several months and friends in Margate have already started gathering aid for Ron and his family. Mugshots in Downtown Margate raised more than $1,000 for the Gallardos last week when bikers from all the major MCs converged on the pub to celebrate Helen’s life. Representatives from the Chrome Angels, Wheels of Man, States, Outlaws and Keltics attended the fundraiser, and the Christian Motorcycle Association came all the way from Palm Beach with a check.
“The outpouring of support was amazing,” said the bartender who helped organize the event,” “We got the word out in a short time and everybody came,” she said.
Ron, Olivia, Victoria and Christopher will continue to need money and supplies until Ron can get back on his feet. All donations can be sent to the John M. Famularo Gallardo Family Account, care of ABC Roofing 3950 NW 120th Street, Coral Springs 33063. ABC Roofing is Helen’s former employer and has set up a trust to help the family.
