Margate City Manager Frank Porcella started working for the city the same year Sonny & Cher aired their last show. Gasoline was around $0.65 a gallon and, facing impeachment, Richard Nixon resigned as America’s 37th President. Films released the year Frank signed on as a Margate firefighter include The Lords of Flatbush, The Godfather Part II and wouldn’t you know it, The Towering Inferno. The year was 1974. The City of Margate was 19 years old.

The Brooklyn-born Porcella holds the figurative Gold Medal for years worked in the city. Frank’s the king; nobody’s worked here longer. After 18 years as Margate Fire Chief, Frank was appointed Assistant City Manager. Shortly thereafter, he replaced acting City Manager Ben Golub, who passed away unexpectedly in June 2006.

Margate commissioners and the public had nice things to say about Porcella – both as a manager and a friend, as city officials publicly recognized his 35 years of service in commission chambers Wednesday night.

In the nearly three years managing Margate, Porcella has rallied for bond money to repair and repave Margate roads, has taken Margate’s Community Redevelopment Agency to new heights, crunched the budget and, along with a fine staff he says, has literally put a new face on Margate – a much happier face.

“Thanks to all the employees of the city who make me shine all the time,” said Porcella in a very humble and heartfelt way, as he addressed the public, his family and city officials.
