Red Light Camera legislation is stalled in Margate until the city’s “Dangerous Intersection Safety Act” is amended to include a maximum fine of $158, and the contract with the city’s Red Light Camera provider, American Traffic Solutions, is amended to comply with new state law.
_______________

Effective July 1, Florida legislation requires Florida municipalities to hand over more than 40 percent of their red-light camera fines to state coffers, leaving cities like Margate - and their red-light camera providers – will far fewer revenues than originally anticipated.

In response, Margate city administrators will recommend to city commissioners that they hike the proposed $125 red light camera fine to $158, the maximum allowed by the new state law.

The city will also renegotiate its contract with American Traffic Solutions (ATS), as Margate's original agreement with ATS included paying the company per infraction, which effective July 1 is prohibited by the new law.

Margate Police Chief, Jerry Blough, said changes to the ordinance and the ATS contract will take some time, adding that the city may or may not see red light cameras by the end of the year.

Two public hearings are required before red light cameras become law in Margate, both of which have yet to be scheduled. Should red-light cameras eventually be voted into law, the public will be notified 30 days before cameras go live, states the proposed Margate ordinance, and an awareness campaign will be instituted.
