In response to calls and emails from residents regarding damage to their tires caused by the broken curb on the southwest corner of Royal Palm Boulevard and State Road 7, MargateNews.net asked Margate Public Works head, Sam May, if the town is responsible for repairing the curb – and resident’s tires.
May said the curb is the responsibility of the state and that residents with tire damage might consider calling FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation).
_______________
According to a worker at the Auto & Truck Repair on the corner, the curb was broken a while back by a large truck. Since, some people have come into his shop with repairs as a result of scraping their sidewall on the curb.
The repair shop’s manager, although agrees that the curb poses a danger to both pedestrians and motorists, says that he sees drivers unnecessarily hug the curb too close, causing damage to sidewalls.
A mechanic at Giant Tire, a repair shop down the road a hundred yards or so, says he’s replaced a few tires busted by the curb, but it’s the driver’s fault, he says, "because everybody’s always in a hurry and they don’t pay attention to the road the way they should."
One Margate resident with a damaged tire said that it’s tough not to hug the curb because the right-turn lane at the intersection is so narrow.
The resident's concerns, however, were more for unsuspecting pedestrians who, without seeing the break, could easily hurt themselves in a fall.
May said the city has a call into FDOT to repair the damage, but says if residents call too, maybe the state will fix it that much quicker.
