At the behest of Margate Mayor, Joeseph Varsallone, Florida State Representative Candidate, Scott Yardley, was escorted from Margate city chambers by police Wednesday night after telling Varsallone he was out of order for interrupting Yardley’s three minutes of public speak allowed by law.
_______________
Yardley was one of about twenty residents lined up to speak Wednesday at the city’s public hearing regarding a proposed increase in fire fees.
Yardley is adverse to tax or fee increases of any kind. He insists that Margate government has enough money to manage itself, it’s just that salaries and benefits in the city are too high.
“It’s an old story in Margate, raise taxes and find a way to justify it,” the father of eight told commissioners.
Yardley was interrupted by the Mayor when speaking about Margate City Commission salaries, which amount to about $30K a year with longevity bonuses.
Upon being interrupted by Varsallone, Yardley abruptly pointed his finger at the Mayor and shouted, “You’re out of order!” which, although in the name of free speech may seem viable to some, was interpreted by the Mayor as a threat to meeting order, who directed the Chief of Police to immediately remove Yardley from chambers.
“Let him speak” shouted a resident from the crowd, “What are you afraid of, the truth?”
The crowd applauded Yardley on his way out of chambers, where the political hopeful met with the applause of about 30 more residents in the lobby.
“I was representing the cause of the people concerned,” Yardley told MargateNews.net, “They showed their support.”
After being removed from chambers Yardley, who gave up his seat to a woman standing early in the meeting, handed out an abundance of campaign literature and shook hands.
“People are smart enough to see what happened that night,” Yardley said, “I’m thankful for it. The Mayor lost face and I gained face.”
_______________
Yardley is running for Florida State Representative and faces incumbent Jim Waldman in November. He ran against Joseph Varsallone for Margate City Commissioner in 2008 and is a proponent of honest government and fiscal responsibility.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, commissioner salaries in Margate fall in the middle half of all legislators in the U.S. – between $13,530 and $38,690 a year in 2006. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned less than $12,190 and the highest-paid 10 percent of legislators (including state reps and senators) earned more than $75,270.
