Despite the down economy and the costs associated with producing fireworks, Margate is sponsoring a “full-blown” July 4th celebration at Margate’s City Center the evening of America’s 234th birthday.
_______________
To save money last year, Margate contracted an abbreviated fireworks display that left many residents and city officials disappointed, both in the quality of the presentation and the time. The show lasted all of ten minutes, say spectators, and the party fell way short of what Margatonians are accustomed to.
Not this year.
Southern Rock rage Amber Leigh will kick off Margate’s July 4th party at 6:45 p.m. followed by fireworks at 9 p.m. Leigh is famous for her gripping fiddle style and brand of crossover country music that appeals to the masses. She’s a Florida native and performs at more than 200 venues up and down the U.S. Atlantic coast and Canada every year.
Leigh has opened for major Nashville acts such as Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Keith Urban, as well as world-renown pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Agulairia.
Although Margate’s $4.5 million budget shortfall this year doesn’t enable the funding of fireworks, this year’s July 4th celebration is being paid for in large part through monies raised by the city's Community Redevelopment Agency.
Non-profit vendors wishing to raise money for their cause at this year’s July 4th event in downtown Margate are encouraged to contact the Margate Community Redevelopment Agency at (954) 935-5324 or email info@margatecra.org. Participating vendors are encouraged to sell family-friendly food, trinkets and souvenirs.
For those interested in participating in Margate’s July 4th Parade, contact Margate Parks and Recreation at 954-972-6458. This year’s Grand Marshall is Ron Brewer from the BIG 105.9 Paul and Young Ron show.
As a matter of fiscal necessity, some South Florida cities cancelled fireworks last year. Margate considered the move, but city officials deemed the patriotic celebration vital to the morale of residents.
