Atlantic Palms owes Margate taxpayers $23,000
• Pay up or we're shutting off your water

The city has given the residents at Atlantic Palms every possible break. The Mayor even worked with their association to help resolve their financial woes and get them back on track so they can once again begin to pay bills.

To no avail, if Atlantic Palms can’t deliver a check to the city for $23,000, or a substantial amount to indicate goodwill by May 1 (Saturday), the city is shutting off their water.

“We’re spending other taxpayers money to support their complex and at some point that’s not right,” Margate City Manager Frank Porcella told city commissioners at a recent City Hall meeting.

Since the housing bust, a substantial number of Atlantic Palm residents have either abandoned their units or stopped paying condo fees, resulting in an association with no money to pay for common area maintenance.

Margate taxpayers have been footing the bill for water, sewer and trash at Atlantic Palms for several months now, with the hopes the association eventually would be able to pay. Every time the association agreed to deliver a check, said Porcella, they had some kind of excuse.

“We seem to get to first base and that’s it,” Porcella said.

Porcella said he sympathized with Atlantic Palm residents, but the city has shut residents’ water off for owing the city a whole lot less like $75 to $100, let alone $23,000.

“I’m at my wits end,” he said.
