MargateNews.net is offering a $200 reward for the arrest of the person or persons perpetuating the recent rash of residential burglaries on NW 69th Terrace in Margate.
Numerous homeowners on the 'one-mile canal' side of the street in the neighborhood behind the firehouse on Rock Island Road between Atlantic Avenue and Royal Palm Boulevard have been victimized in recent weeks in broad daylight. Thieves have entered through both front and back doors and have stolen guns, electronics and cash, say neighbors.
_______________
Crooks broke in through the back sliding glass door of one home, stealing more than $30,000 in assets. In another home, the front door was jimmied, but thieves broke in through a back window, stealing two flatscreen TVs and cash. Front doors of two other homes showed pry marks around locks, but thieves apparently were discouraged when locks didn’t give way easily.
Some residents on the canal said they were more concerned about family members being home during a burglary than they were the loss of personal property.
“Who cares if they steal the dammed TV’s. What if my wife comes home when one of the crazies is robbing my house,” said longtime one-mile canal resident, Gary Rogers, adding that he’d like to see more police patrols on his street.
Neighbor Rick, five houses down from Rogers, said his wife comes home every day for lunch and the kids in the afternoon, that’s his main concern.
“We’re inclined to think it’s someone who lives in the neighborhood,” said Rick, “and knows when people are coming and going.”
Rick said police can only do so much unless they catch someone in the act and didn’t speak to whether he thought police presence in the neighborhood was adequate.
Although neighbors along NW 69th Terrace have no organized neighborhood crime watch, they all keep an eye out for another, say neighbors, and call police when they see suspicious activity.
Rogers said he’s taking extra security precautions at his house and like Rick has a barking dog to discourage intruders.
Although for some $200 isn’t a lot of money, sometimes all it takes is a few dollars to get a family member to roll over on a criminal relation in order to bring relief to a broken family or stop a pattern of household intimidation, say confidential informants.
Someone who lives in the neighborhood and knows the crooks and / or location of the stolen property may also be interested in cleaning up their neighborhood, or ratting out conspirators because of bad blood or a criminal enterprise gone sour.
To collect the $200 reward from MargateNews.net, you must provide police with information leading to the arrest of burglars and / or the location of stolen merchandise taken from homes on NW 69th Avenue, then email a stamped copy of a police report stating the details to MargateNews.net, along with your contact number. The report will be verified for authenticity and MargateNews.net will notify you with findings.
To learn more about Margate’s Neighborhood CrimeWatch program, Margate residents can contact Officer Tony Careccia at Margate’s Neighborhood Policing Division at 954-972-1232.
