At a time when the Broward County school system is fraught with corruption, cost overruns, promiscuity and union conflicts, a small, private school in Margate, unaffiliated with the system, is setting the standard for quality education by employing teachers and staff who make early childhood learning a top priority.

“For 18 months our Early Childhood Center has been striving to reach the highest goals of the Quality Rating System,” said Academy Principal, Rivkie Denburg.  “This program challenges early childhood centers interested in going beyond state requirements in an effort to achieve the highest standards of excellence.”

The Quality Rating System program is supported at both the federal and state levels and includes a set of grueling, validated criteria focused on curriculum, teaching, methodologies, physical plant, equipment, safety, marketing, finances and accountability.

Project coordinator for the Academy, Ellen Farina, said the achievement for the school is especially commendable, as the Quality Rating challenge is a completely voluntary program and that the teachers’ and principals’ chose on their own to pursue it.

“Faculty and staff bought into it,” said Farina, “working after hours and on Sundays without extra pay or bonsues to make it happen.”

The Hebrew Academy adds the 4+ Quality Rating to its many accomplishments, including the Gold Seal for Quality Care awarded by Florida’s Department of Families & Children Services.  The school also earned a perfect score when its students were tested for Reading Readiness by the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program.

“The Star Rating gives us even more bragging rights,” Farina said.

The award-winning, triple-accredited Hebrew Academy, an official VPK provider, services infants through the 8th grade.  The school is located at 1500 N. State Road 7 in Margate.  Registration is currently underway for the coming school year.
