Biker and Margate mom Mary Becerra know what’s it’s like to shoulder the cost of health insurance for children, which is why she’s organized a benefit for Josie Lou Ratley and family at Mugshots Bar & Grill in Margate at 1047 N. State Road 7. The event, which takes place Thursday April 8 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., includes a raffle, silent auction, live music by Stone Mojo and eats. Bikers from all over the county are expected to attend.
_______________

Ratley, a Deerfield Beach teen beaten into a medical coma by another Deerfield Beach teen angered by a coercive text message, say investigators, remains in critical condition at Broward General Medical Center. Although Ratley's immediate medical care is covered by medicaid, out-of-pocket expenses for the teen's long-term recovery remain in question, prompting an outpouring of financial support by the local community.

Margate City Commissioners David McLean and Joseph Varsallone will be in attendance, said Becerra, and although the event is free, she is asking for people attending to drop $1, $5, $10 or $20 into the bucket to help pay for Ratley’s hospital bills.

Sponsors for the event include:

• Office Depot Coral Springs
• Mannino’s
• Tratorria Bella Cibo
• JM Lexus
• RN Jewelers
• Heron Bay Golf and Country Club
• Zuccarelli's
• Palm Lakes Plaza Publix
• Park and Pawn
• Jackie Becerra Jewelry
• Patrick Walsh
• Chrome Angels MC
• Kelly Columbo
• Sooner or Later Band
• Slumber Parties by Linda
• I Declutter you, Inc.

“You would want the same if it happened to your child and you didn’t have adequate health coverage,” Becerra said.

For more information or to donate if you cannot attend, please call 954-974-4420.
