Margate City Commissioner, Joseph Varsallone, was sworn in as Margate’s new mayor at the city commission meeting on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, replacing acting Margate Mayor Arthur Bross, 73, in the annual mayoral rotation.

Every year, Margate City Commissioners choose a new Mayor and Vice Mayor from among the ranks. Although votes are tallied on the dais, historically, Margate City Commissioners are known to occupy the mayoral seat in sequential order.
_______________

Varsallone, 75, has held a seat on Margate’s City Commission for 25 years. He’s a U.S. Veteran and retired self-employed insurance agent advocating for the constitutional rights of residents in Margate and for the redevelopment of blighted areas in the city.

Varsallone last ran for re-election as a Margate City Commissioner in 2008, challenged by Joyce Bryan, Dennis Cantlay, Lesa Peerman and Scott Yardley. Varsallone won the election despite poor voter turnout and a virtually non-existent campaign, save strategically placed ‘snipe’ signs of various proportion that read “Vote for Your Commissioner Joe Varsallone.”

Once in favor of disallowing gas stations to sell beer and wine more than twenty years ago, Varsallone has since voted yes to liquor licenses at restaurants, pubs, ethnic groceries and convenience stores throughout the city. In addition, Varsallone is a proponent of bottle clubs in Margate, the most recent proposal for which was redacted from a city commission agenda.

Margate’s new Vice Mayor in the rotation, City Commissioner Frank Talerico, is an audiologist by trade and said that he wishes for less arguing on the dais among city commissioners in 2010 and more proactive initiatives aimed at fiduciary responsibility in the city and the fine tuning of Margate's strategic planning process.
