Last year’s fireworks in Margate got bad reviews from residents. The display lasted about 10 minutes and was far from what city officials and residents expected.
“I’ve never seen fireworks shot so fast in my whole life,” said resident and former city commission candidate Le Peerman. “It was like they were getting paid by the second.”

Instead of not having fireworks altogether last year—like so many cities across Broward did as a result of the down economy—Margate opted for an abbreviated version of their usual fireworks display, which ended up disappointing residents more than if the city had no fireworks at all.
After a lengthy discussion by Margate Community Redevelopment Agency officials as to whether the city can afford fireworks this year, the conversation turned further away from fiscal responsibility and more toward patriotism and the morale of residents.
Margate Commissioner, Dave McLean insisted that fireworks are an integral part of celebrating the Fourth of July and not having them is an erosion of American traditions.
“My father fought for this country, Joe (speaking to Commissioner, Varsallone) you fought for this country. This is one day that is more important than almost anything. This is an important day. This is about our independence,” McLean said.
Margate Commissioner, Frank Talerico, cautioned the MCRA board that this year is going to be worse than last in terms of city finances, but that if the city is going to have fireworks, “then do it right,” he said.
Margate residents in attendance, Rich Popovic and Le Peerman, agreed that the city should have fireworks because, as Peerman put it, “It’s the one time that, in the history of towns and cities, people get together.”
To pay for Fourth of July festivities this year, the city has earmarked $12,000 of the city budget for the parade and will be funding the fireworks display up to $30,000 with MCRA funds.
