Margate’s Hebrew Academy Community School invites residents to join its 400 children as they parade in costume in celebration of the festive holiday of Purim. Special guests include Grand Marshall Broward County Sheriff, Al Lamberti, Vice Mayor, Joseph Varsallone and the community’s senior citizens who are always honored on this “Grandparents & Special Friends Day” by the students.
Everyone is invited to join the festivities on Friday, February 26th from 8:45 – 11:00 AM.
_______________
The holiday of Purim celebrates the bravery of the lovely Queen Esther who, together with her cousin Mordechai, saved the Jewish people from certain destruction at the hands of the evil villain Haman. The annual parade, led by the characters of Haman leading Mordechai on horseback – reminiscent of the historical parade in ancient Persia - will take place at the Hebrew Academy campus (1500 N. State Road 7) beginning at about 8:45 AM where the children will dance and sing to favorite Chassidic and Israeli favorites.
Guests will then be invited to join the children as the dignitaries present the awards to the Costume Competition winners, to sing Purim songs together with the famous Hebrew Academy boys’ choir and to enjoy some Purim shpiel (comedy) skits presented by students. Of course, lots of freshly baked hamantaschen – the traditional Purim pastry – will be on hand to complete the festivities.
“Each year our Purim celebration is dedicated to our Grandparents and Senior Friends who are invited to visit, learn and play with the children of the Hebrew Academy as they celebrate the joyous holiday of Purim”, explains Director of Administration, Carol Stav.
“We thank Sheriff Lamberti, Margate Vice Mayor Joseph Varsallone and the extraordinary officers of the B.S.O. and Margate Police Department for their many kindnesses to our school. We are very fortunate to live in a county and city that respects the traditions and customs of every religion and people and that provides such outstanding municipal services and security the whole year round. We especially thank the Mayor, Vice Mayor and Commissioners of Margate for presenting us with a beautiful plaque, thanking the Hebrew Academy for “Sharing the Joyous Holiday of Purim” with the city. What an amazing thing to do!” said Stav.
The award-winning, triple-accredited Hebrew Academy, servicing infants through the 8th grade, is located at 1500 N. State Road 7 in Margate. Registration is currently underway for the coming school year.
