Open only a few months, McLean’s Bar & Grill, owned by Margate City Commissioner, David McLean is closed. A source close to the matter said McLean may have ignored laws set in place by the Division of Alcohol Beverage & Tobacco and was shut down.
_______________
McLean’s Bar & Grill has been on the Division’s ‘No Sale’ list since September 30, 2009, for owing Double Eagle Distributors (Budweiser) $390.00.
Once on the No Sale list, beer vendors have to make good on delinquent payments before they can once again buy beer from a licensed distributor and resell to the public.
Financially-strapped bar owners who can't afford weekly deliveries often stop buying beer from licensed distributors and start buying direct from retailers, which is illegal if they resell the product to the public.
Although the resale margin on beer purchased from a retailer isn’t as good as when purchased from a licensed distributor, bar owners can forego reporting taxes on retail re-sales because no invoices are on file with a distributor to show the state that the bar has inventory to sell, hence the bar owner pockets what would otherwise be taxed.
Over the years, McLean has owned several bars in Margate. He’s been taken to court in the past by a distributor for writing bad checks and has been served by the City of Margate numerous times for code violations.
A sign on the entrance to McLean’s Bar & Grill currently reads “Reopen Soon,” but any and all indication that the bar is owned by McLean has been removed from the bar’s exterior.
