Students from Margate’s Atlantic West Elementary School have been selling out of “Haiti Houses” faster than they can make them. Art Teacher, Mindy Agress is leading the project at Atlantic West and donating all proceeds to the American Red Cross to help Haitian earthquake victims.
_______________
The “Haiti Houses” project was started by Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, two Monarch High art teachers in Coconut Creek, as a way for their students to make a difference in the lives of others.
The Haiti Houses website offers educators a complete took kit for fashioning pins and magnets out of tiny handmade houses crafted from basic arts and crafts materials.
The recommended donation is $5.00 each and is contributed to any one of eight organizations helping Haitian earthquake victims find shelter, water, food and healthcare: Food for the Poor, American Red Cross, AmeriCares, Mercy Corps, UNICEP, Doctors Without Borders, The Pan American Development Foundation and Beyond Borders.
The "Haiti Houses" website tracks monies raised in real time. To date, almost $35,000 has been donated to Haiti earthquake victims.
“Please stop by and purchase a Haiti House for $5.00 and the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross. The goal is to get all of our students to make one,” Agress said.
