As part of the accreditation process through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the Margate Police Department is required to submit an annual statistical summary of all complaints made against departmental personnel.
Summary findings indicate the public’s perception of the Margate Police Department remains positive.
_______________
Of the total 70,472 service calls answered by Margate Police Officers in 2009, a total of 28 complaints against departmental personnel were filed, a 15 percent drop in the number of complaints filed in 2008.
Police calls for service ranged from violent crimes to minor service calls. Included in these calls for service were 22,510 traffic related incidents, such as traffic crashes and traffic stops.
After investigation, 17 of the 28 complaints were found to be unsustainable. Five complaints were actionable and six complaints remained under investigation at the time the MPD statistical report was released.
More than one-hundred individuals believed that the service that they received from the Margate Police Department was worthy of praise and wrote letters or sent e-mails to the department commending officers for their actions, according to the report.
MPD Public Information Officer, Detective Efrain Suarez, said that since most people expect good service from the MPD and say nothing, receiving a hundred letters complimenting service is telling as to the way the department is perceived by the public.
A recent Citizen’s Satisfaction Survey conducted by the department shows that 93 percent of Margate residents are confident in the MPD's ability to deal with criminal activity and address neighborhood crime problems.
The Margate Police Department is the first police agency in Broward County to be accredited by the CFA. The review process is very strict as indicated by the 463 CALEA standards and the 83 CFA standards the MPD needs to meet in order to maintain what is considered a highly-prized recognition of law enforcement excellence.
The MPD has met CALEA accreditation standards in 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2009, and CFA standards in 2000, 2003 and 2007.
Over the course of 2009, 37 Excellence Awards were presented to MPD officers and civilian personnel: Twelve for Officer of the Month; 12 for Civilian of the Month; one for each Officer of the Year and Civilian of the Year and the remainder for acts above and beyond the call of duty.
