After analyzing academic data from 21, 000 public high schools in 48 states, U.S.News & World Report awarded Margate’s Atlantic Technical Center a Silver Medal. The Magnet school achieved above average college readiness scores and out-performed hundreds of high schools across Florida.
_______________
Carol Friedlander, Co-Projects Coordinator for the school, said 100 percent of seniors graduated last year and roughly 90 percent enrolled in college.
“Other schools look at us as a model school for both rigorous academics and technical excellence,” she said.
ATC first opened its doors in August 1973 to 450 students in 11 programs of instruction. Over the years, four major construction phases have been added to help the center keep pace with program expansion, community growth and labor market demands. Today, more than 5,000 students attend classes offered days, evenings, and Saturdays.
“Much of our success comes from enrolling students from motivated families with high goals,” said Friedlander. We’re committed to small class sizes and are consistently ranked among A-schools.”
For students considering Atlantic Technical Center as an alternative to a conventional high school, the first two years of the curriculum are focused on academics and the last two spent studying a career elective such as Automotive Technology, Culinary Arts, Health Sciences or Computer Technology.
Although Atlantic Technical Center has no football, baseball or basketball programs, it does offer extracurricular sports like kayaking, bowling and others.
U.S.News & World Report has Atlantic Technical Center located in Margate, but the schools address is Coconut Creek. When asked which one was correct, Friedlander responded:
“Technically we’re in the City of Coconut Creek, but when I look out my window I see Margate.”
