Margate Elementary School 3rd Grade Teacher, Alava Alexander is teaching kids how to run a business at an early age. She shows them how to determine profit, salaries and expenses, and imparts real world experience in dealing with customers, counting money and running the cash register. She calls it Kidz ‘n’ Biz.
_______________

Kidz ‘n’ Biz set up shop at the Margate Green Market selling trinkets and gifts handmade by classmates. The club meets every Thursday after school and is entirely self-sufficient. Revenues earned go back into the business.

“The students manufacture everything themselves and oversee quality control,” said Alvarez. “Only when they meet expenses do they get paid. If someone comes up with a creative idea to boost sales, they get a bonus.”

Alavarez introduced Kidz ‘n’ Biz to Margate Elementary about six years ago – and the response from kids and parents has been overwhelming, she says. It was initially set up as an extracurricular activity for high achievers, but it soon became more.

“In managing shopping centers for 20 years, finding young people who knew how to work was difficult,” she said. “With Kidz ‘n’ Biz, we bring common sense and work ethic back to life.”

Not only does Alvarez teach children how to run a business, they learn about goodwill and giving too. Monies remaining after payroll and expenses are donated to charities such as Food for the Poor, Kids in Distress and others.

Parent, Michele Guy, says the program has made a difference in her son Hunter’s life.

“He’s learning the value of a dollar, respect and responsibility, said Guy. “And he can’t participate unless he gets all his schoolwork done. That's what I like about it.”
