While millions of Americans watched Idol’s first Hollywood show, the Margate Board of Adjustment was deciding whether or not to grant Rio Grande a beer and wine license within 180 feet of a preschool. Rio Grande is a new Mexican Restaurant in the Penn Dutch plaza.

Currently, Margate Law provides that no liquor licenses be approved for restaurants serving beer, wine or liquor within 1,000 feet of a preschool or house of worship – to which Rio Grande is within 200 feet of both. There was no discussion among the Board as to why the 1000 foot rule was enacted in the first place. In fact, one board member said it wasn't germain to the topic.

A wings restaurant, a few hundred feet from the preschool, already serves beer and wine, and the operator of the preschool said that she had no knowledge that such a law was in place. The International Church was unavailable for comment.

The Board of Adjustment waived the thousand-foot law for Rio Grande and forwarded their recommendation to city commissioners for a vote.

In other business, the Board of Adjustment approved a conditional permit for Carlos Islas at 954 West River Drive to store a utility trailer in his driveway. Islas told city planners that his trailer is used to transport racing bikes. According to public records, Islas is a handyman who lists his 954 West River Drive address as his primary place of business for his Florida Corporation, but pays no business tax receipt to the city.

Notwithstanding Islas unlawfully running a business out of his home, the Board of Adjustment approved the conditional permit and forwarded their recommendation to commissioners for approval.
