You see them everywhere. D.E.E.S. and Public Works employees in red shirts maintaining and repairing all things that keep Margatonians safe and healthy. Sewers, water lines, medians, trees, roads, parks, pests and potholes – anywhere you go in Margate, you’re bound to run into a guy in a red shirt.
_______________
In all the years I’ve lived in this city, the guys (and gals) in red shirts have always been helpful. They let you know what they’re doing and why and, if by chance you need a helping hand, they’ll lend you one.
Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting George. He lives in Sunrise and came to Margate with a Class A license looking for a job. Qualified to do just about anything, George was charged with making sure the fire hydrant across from my home worked properly. It was second time I saw him in weeks, so my interest was piqued as to whether there was a problem.
While George diligently worked at purging sediment from the hydrant, he talked about his days farming bananas and plantains in Puerto Rico. He expressed a passion for agriculture and imparted to me valuable advice about raising bananas, as George noticed bunches of the yellow fruit hanging from the broad-leafed wonders in my yard.
George is one of many red shirts I’ve enjoyed conversing with through the years. Knowing that people like George help to maintain the community where I live is a good feeling and that whoever does the hiring in the city has a knack for choosing good candidates.
A big hats-off to the red shirts, whose sweat and hard work keep our city beautiful and running smoothly every day.
