“Isn’t it nice to know that we have police patrolling our streets to protect us?” asked the caller.
“Are you looking for money?” I responded.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I just wanted to know if you thought it was nice to know that we have police patrolling our streets,” he answered back.
_______________
A member of the ‘Federal Do Not Call’ list, I was shocked to say the least when I received this call from the Fraternal Order of Police Ft. Lauderdale Chapter – or so they said. After the caller finally admitted to soliciting for the FOP Memorial Fund, I hung up the phone and immediately called back to confirm the call’s legitimacy. It seemed legit, at least at face, and I asked them to immediately remove me from their list. I haven’t heard from them since.
Regardless of whether these phone calls are legitimate or not, they’re predatory and often rely on ‘guilting’ or intimidating the mark (that’s you) into a making a donation.
This isn’t to say that I’m not happy having police patrolling my streets. I am – and without policemen and women safeguarding our neighborhoods all chaos could break out.
But there’s a time and a place for everything and targeting senior communities with telemarketing tactics such as this is in poor taste.
Cops are heroes. You’ll take a bullet for a stranger and put yourself in harm’s way to protect the innocent. We’re totally on your side and grateful for it, but listen here FOP, you’ve got 325,000 members in your organization nationwide, so if each of you (and I’m sure many do and more) contribute $100 a year, that’ll give you $32,500,000 year one.
Invest it wisely.
Leave us to our kid’s and grandkid's college funds and to save for retirement for when Social Security runs out.
