A young, overweight Mom entered the convenience store the other day and gave her child a choice of what to have for breakfast. The child, appearing about six years old and overweight too, chose the strawberry crème wafers for $0.99, a mass of bleached flour and sugar void of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber.
It's time we stop feeding our kids junk. Bad diet is adversely affecting the minds and bodies of a whole generation, the least problems of which may be physical obesity.

Nutrition plays a significant role in a child’s brain development, from behavior and memory to cognitive thinking, learning capacity and concentration.
“Poor nutrition, characterized by zinc, iron, vitamin B and protein deficiencies, leads to low IQ, which can then lead to antisocial behavior,” states the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Studies in recent years indicate that the penetration of fast food in diet and the overconsumption of food with artificial colors, flavors and preservatives has resulted in more violent and less intelligent kids. Not only do these foods have fewer of the needed vitamins and minerals for positive growth, they contain chemicals and bad fats that over time can impede the decision-making process of children and negatively impact their ability to make rationale choices (by the way, the same goes for adults).
“The brain, more than any other organ, is affected for better or worse by what we eat. If a child is a junk food addict, their brain is the first thing that will be affected. A growing body of research points to the impact of nutritional deficiencies on the brain’s ability to affect learning and behavior,” writes ‘America’s Pediatrician,’ Dr. Bill Sears on interactiveDadmagazine.com.
Sears is a leading author on childcare and well-known for his theories on Nutritional Deficit Disorder(NDD).
Is it possible that nutrition is responsible for bad grades and poor FCAT scores here in Florida? Can we draw parallels between our children’s poor diet and the heighten incidence of gun and knife-toting students and bullying in Broward and Dade schools? The answer to both is “Yes”, as supported by hundreds of reputable studies aimed at the impact of nutrition and diet on brain development and child behavior.
The Internet provides a wealth of sources on child nutrition and how to improve your kid’s diet and eating habits. Brainy-Child.com talks about increased water intake, calorie control and the benefits of fish oil and good fats. Here you'll also find more than 50 articles on boosting your child’s intellect, the need for exercise and how to naturally enhance their immune system.
The United States is falling behind as a world leader in ideas, innovation and overall smarts -- and far too many have turned to gluttony. Not only do we eat too much, we consumer too many of the wrong foods, throwing our metabolism and minds off balance, making us lazy, fatigued, angry, anxious, manic and depressed.
Don’t let this happen to your kids.
