Luis Rivera of Margate recently failed in an attempt to appeal a ruling that determined his Pit Bull was dangerous. The dog got loose one day, got away from Rivera and attacked a neighbor walking his dog.
Representing himself before a Margate Magistrate last week, Rivera makes a solid case for a profile recently established by the Journal of Forensic Sciences that points to a heightened level of psychopathy among vicious dog owners.
Check out this shocking YouTube video of Rivera’s testimony in Margate Chambers.
In a July report entitled “Vicious Dogs Who owns them and why,” MargateNews.net revealed a study – only the second of its kind – which attempts to scientifically profile the owners of vicious dogs. When compared to 189 owners of low-risk dog breeds; owners of vicious dog breeds had nearly 10 times more criminal convictions than other dog owners. According to findings, vicious dog owners were:
• 6.8 times more likely to be convicted of an aggressive crime
• 2.8 times more likely to have carried out a crime involving children
• 2.4 times more likely to have perpetrated domestic violence
• 5.4 times more likely to have an alcohol conviction
It’s undisputed that your dog meets the definition of a dangerous dog,” the Magistrate told Rivera, “I’m making a finding that your dog is indeed dangerous and your are going to be subject to all city codes that pertain to dangerous dogs.”
In Margate, this means that Rivera must now register his dangerous dog with the City for $200 a year, secure an enclosure with clearly marked warning signs, and obtain $100,000 in liability insurance going forward. Rivera also has 60 days to have his dog sterilized.
In surveying officials from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) regarding problems with Pit Bull attacks in South Florida, MargateNews.net found top officials at all three organizations agreeing on one main point: The Pit Bull owner is ultimately responsible for its dog’s actions and vicious dog owners are prone to animal abuse, cruelty to their dogs and a heightened sense of aggression.
“Pit Bulls are the most dangerous dog breed on the planet” said Martin Mersereau Director of Cruelty Casework for PETA, “Their unconscionable owners make them that way.”
