Son of a Florida Highway Patrolman of 27 years, Margate-born, Brian Blum is off to the races next week as he joins the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Team for races in Tennessee, Virginia and Taladega Alabama.

Blending frozen concoctions over the summer, Blum, a Computer Networking graduate from Atlantic Technical Center in Margate, is paying his bills selling Ritter’s Frozen Custard for now, but has his eyes set on the NASCAR truck circuit and eventually winning a few bucks competing there.

Blum’s hero is his Dad. A former drag racing professional from Ohio burning rubber in a ’69 Camaro. It was originally his mom, though, who got him started in racing.

“I liked to race just about anything; my bike, video racing games, you name it,” said the NASCAR hopeful. “My Mom noticed it early. She’s actually the one that got me into racing. Of course, my Dad loved that."

Blum, age 19, graduated with honors from Atlantic VoTech and credits his parents with pushing him to do well in school during his formative years. He reserved the weekends for racing, but during the week, “was more worried about grades than anything else,” he said.

Blum currently attends Broward Community College. When finished, he plans on heading to either FAU or UCF to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science in Information Technology. Blum is a self-proclaimed “Gamer” -- owning every NASCAR game there is -- and lists “Call of Duty” and “Medal of Honor” among video game favorites he plays online.

Nickelback and Rascal Flatts are his favorite bands and Black Hawk Down and Days of Thunder top movie picks.

Today’s youth should be more concerned about education than anything else, says the teen racer, and hobbies are important too, as they tend to “get you away from all the bad things in life,” he said.

“Avoid texting in the classroom, focus on your studies and only sit down with a video game after all your homework is done,” Blum remarked.

Blum’s favorite food is Cheeseburgers, and although the racing phenom ‘texts’ occassionally while driving, “I shouldn’t,” he admits.

Having raced for years, Blum knows the thrill of victory. But losing, he says, can sometimes teach you more.

“It makes you try harder and pushes you to the next level,” said the future NASCAR star.
