Turning Margate into a Certified Wildlife Habitat™
One yard at a time
Thursday,
July 30, 2009
Margate Resident, Ted Allman, has decided to take his yard to the next level. He’s joined thousands of wildlife enthusiasts across America creating a habitat for neighborhood wildlife in their very own yards.
In a program sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation, Allman’s yard meets all the criteria of a Certified Wildlife Habitat™. He supplies food and water for local wildlife, cover from the elements and a place for animals to raise young. Every morning, Allman’s Margate yard is alive with Ringed-necked Doves and Orange-ringed Parrots, baby ducks, butterflies and the occasional Great White Egret.
Wildlife is nothing new to Margate. In fact, not too long ago, wild boar and Florida panthers roamed this part of the Everglades and Eagles nested atop trees. The city is recognized by the South Florida Audubon Society as a Bird Sanctuary and is by law declared a haven for wildlife.
The National Wildlife Federation website provides you with all the tools you need to create your own Certified Wildlife Habitat,™ from what to plant to attract butterflies and birds to sustainable gardening practices and ways to share wildlife with your kids.
For a nominal $20 application fee, you’ll even get sign like Ted’s to post in your yard and a bunch of other great National Wildlife Federation benefits.
Between Facebook and Twitter, texting, television, MySpace and the blogs, it’s easy to forget that just outside your door is a whole other world -- a world without electricity or fossil fuels, traffic, cell phones or your laptop. A world known as your yard. One that needs only rainwater, sunshine, the morning dew and little tender loving care to enjoy.
