Show of Strength aims to curb crime in Margate
Margate Police celebrate 9th Annual National Night Out
Tuesday,
July 28, 2009
If you like cop shows, then you’ll love National Night Out (NNO) at the Banks Road Sports Complex August 4th from 7 to 10 p.m. The Margate Police Department will be showcasing K-9 Cops, police helicopters, armed personnel carriers, SWAT trucks, Mobile Command Vehicles and more, all in an effort to let criminals know area law enforcement means business.
“Billy the Marlin” and “Ronald McDonald” will entertain kids while families enjoy free hot dogs, free popcorn, snow cones and carnival rides. Free gun locks will be available while supplies last and you can get a picture of your child on a Margate Police Motorcycle for free too.
Celebrated the first Tuesday in August by police departments nationwide since 1984, cops, kids and families mix and mingle in communities around the country during National Night Out to find out more about crime prevention and how they can work alongside police to fight crime in their neighborhoods. NNO was founded by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and developed as a means of strengthening the bond between citizens and police.
For the past five years, Margate has received a National NATW Award for neighborhood crime fighting excellence.
In addition to freebies and fun offered by Margate Police – displays and activities by state, federal and law enforcement agencies such as the DEA, FBI, ATF, BSO and FHP (Florida Highway Patrol) will be a highlight of the evening and Florida’s 93 Rock radio and Platinum Entertainment will provide live entertainment throughout the night.
Last year, National Night Out attracted more than 37 million people from almost 16,000 communities around the nation. Those interested in a career in law enforcement or the military are encouraged to attend.
“National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention and neighborhood camaraderie. While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out does represent the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places throughout the year,” said NNO founder, Matt Peskin, Executive Director of NATW.
