What is this?

In an effort to dispatch early responders to areas of the county hardest hit after a hurricane, Broward County encourages residents to call 311 and report damage to their home, or complete a brief home damage assessment online form as soon as it is safe to go outside and survey storm damage.

The Home Damage Assessment Program is new this year and designed to provide emergency response teams with a critical, early indication of where major devastation has occurred in Broward.

To participate in the program, you’re asked to compare the damage to your home with four photographs found online here, or by printing the county’s “311 Hurricane” file found at the right, top of the page and hanging it on your refrigerator until hurricane season blows over.

Whether you call in or email your damage report, you’re required to rate the level of damage to your house as:

Level 1 – No or minor damage; habitable
Level 2 – Major damage; habitable
Level 3 – Major damage; uninhabitable
Level 4 – Destroyed

You also have Level 5 and Level 6 Flood options to report.

Note that operators and those manning call centers cannot accept your information without reporting damage as indicated by the Home Damage Assessment Brochure (bookmark this page).

Take photographs now. Don’t delay!

If you don’t already have access to a digital camera or picture phone, borrow a neighbor’s and take photographs of both the inside and outside of your home (and automobile) before a storm hits. Store these photographs in a designated file on your computer, as well as to print them out and find a safe, waterproof place to store them, preferably with other vital documentation such as IDs, marriage licenses, car titles, insurance policies, mortgage papers and other documents critical in identifying and protecting you, your property and your family. Doing this will help you obtain a just and fair settlement should you have to submit an insurance claim resulting from storm damage.
