A prototype of what may be the bus shelter of the future in Margate was recently erected at the intersection of State Road 7 and Coconut Creek Parkway at a cost of $40,000.
This prototype shelter was paid for by a grant received by the Margate Community Development Agency (MCRA). It’s similar to shelters in Lauderdale Lakes and Lauderhill and built by the same contractor: Coastal Contracting & Development. The MCRA is considering building 11 more. If they do, the contract will be sent out to bid, said MCRA Executive Director, Frank Porcella at a recent city meeting.
When the bus shelter is complete. A solar panel will light-up the shelter at night and power a digital read out provided by Broward County Transit that tells riders when the next bus is coming.
In surveying people waiting at bus stop during the past week; some say they really like it, some are indifferent about it and others told MargateNews.net that unless the rain comes straight down it’s almost impossible to stay dry.
All those surveyed shared one thing in common: They were amazed at the $40,000 price tag.
According to the contract with Coastal Contracting & Development, the new bus shelter is waiting for Bahama shutters.
