In an effort to draw more attention to the proposed Margate City Center site, Margate City Officials and the Margate Community Redevelopment Agency (MCRA) launched the first of many Green Markets on the old Swap Shop land on Sunday.

Roughly 1600 residents and visitors turned out to buy orchids, fresh breads and produce, exotic hummus, Gyros, hot sauce and burgers. All while the ‘All Porpoise Band’ belted out sixties tunes.

Even the Broward County Beekeepers Association showed up to teach kids about honey bees. “Pretty cool,” said one parent, as her four kids looked on in amazement.

Although the Swap Shop had been, for years, a place where locals purchased inexpensive produce, fish, flowers and other goods, it had become rundown and mismanaged over time. The city saw the opportunity to purchase the land and incorporate it into the proposed City Center project.

“I’m really happy to see Margate bringing it back,” said one resident, while others commented that it was surely a step up from the past.

Roughly 20 vendors showed for the first day, many of whom said that they are definitely returning in February for the next one. Margate’s Green Market is expected to continue from   9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays: Feb. 8, Feb. 22, March 8, March 22, March 29 and April 26.

For more information, or to participate as a vendor (Margate is selling booth space real cheap – almost impossible not to make a profit) Call the MCRA at (954) 935-5324.
